The MAIS basketball all-state teams and awards were recently announced, with multiple area players and coaches being honored. 

Local baseball and softball teams had a strong week, with multiple teams traveling for tournaments during the spring break week for most schools.

Germantown alumna and Ridgeland native Madison Booker, who is now a star at the University of Texas, was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year last week, following a phenomenal sophomore season. 

Baseball and softball season is off to a fast start in the Madison County area and here are a few teams who are off to hot starts so far this year. 

Jon Marcus Duncan will resign as the head coach of Jackson Prep and is leaving coaching after 25 years at the helm of the girls and boys programs. 

Ridgeland earned their revenge over Olive Branch on Saturday night, putting together a 79-53 route in the MHSAA 5A state championship game, the first in program history.

Canton boys basketball earned their second consecutive MHSAA 5A state championship on Friday night, beating rival Holmes County Central 53-35. 

Canton girls basketball saw their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion for the second year in a row, falling 51-49 in the MHSAA 5A state championship game against Pontotoc. 

Germantown reached new heights on Thursday night, beating rival Madison Central 69-52 in the MSHAA 7A state championship game to earn the school’s first boys basketball state title. 

Ridgeland will get another chance at a 6A state title matchup with Olive Branch, after knocking off Pascagoula in a 70-60 overtime semifinal thriller on Thursday afternoon.

Jackson Prep captured their MAIS-leading seventeenth Overall state title, with a thrilling 53-51 victory over rival Jackson Academy on Wednesday night at Mississippi College. 

One of Madison County’s biggest rivalries will take place on the biggest stage, as Madison Central will play rival Germantown for a MHSAA 7A boys basketball state championship on Thursday night.

Canton continued their quest for a second straight MHSAA 5A state title with a dominant 79-59 semifinal win over Laurel on Tuesday night. 

Canton trailed by as many as 15 points in Tuesday’s MHSAA 5A semifinal matchup against  defending state champion Laurel. After storming back in the second half, the Lady Tigers had the ball on the final possession with a chance to win the game.

Madison Central boys soccer knocked off Northwest Rankin in the MHSAA 7A soccer championship game in an absolute thriller that went eight rounds of penalty kicks. 

Madison Central continued their impressive state tournament run with a 57-44 over Brandon in the MHSAA 7A semifinals on Monday to advance to the program’s first state title game since 2015. 

Germantown boys basketball rolled over Biloxi 55-30 in the MHSAA 7A semifinals on Monday afternoon to advance to the first state title game in program history.

Here is the state tournament schedule for remaining area MAIS and MHSAA basketball teams, as they enter the final week of the season. All MAIS games will take place at Mississippi College and all MHSAA games will be played at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson.

The Jackson Prep boys basketball team opened the MAIS overall state tournament with a 64-53 win over Heritage Academy on Tuesday night. 

Eleven area basketball teams are still alive in the state quarterfinals as of Wednesday, with several huge matchups upcoming late in the postseason.
