MADISON — A sibling duo here is taking their skateboarding talents global.

Josh Byrd and Sarah Byrd-Compton were recently selected to the USA Slalom Skateboarding National Team for the World Skate Games Italia 2024.

They are both highly decorated in the world of slalom skateboarding, with Byrd-Compton winning the 2023 Amateur World Championships and ranking as the sixth fastest woman in the world, while Josh Byrd finished sixth in the US National Championship in 2023.

Slalom skateboarding involves skating through a downhill course that is usually banked on the sides and marked by cones. Teams or individuals can compete in the sport, with the objective being to have the fastest time possible.

Slalom skateboarding is described by USA Slalom Skateboarding as “one of the oldest disciplines of skateboarding.” Intent on being as fast as possible, this pair is as accomplished and respected as anyone in their respective fields.

“I am super excited to be a part of this team and get the chance to compete on the world stage in Italy this year,” Sarah Byrd-Compton said. “I never thought I’d be able to represent my country while doing something I love, riding my skateboard.”

The two siblings have been lifelong skateboarders, with Sarah Byrd-Compton starting at just five and winning the Junior Girls World Championship in slalom skateboarding by 2005.

On the other hand, Josh Byrd has “been deeply involved with the sport since 2000” and has titles such as the Junior World Championship, which he won in 2003.

Now, the pair will try to add to their decorated careers with the US National Team at the World Skate Games.

“I’m super stoked about the opportunity to race on a global level at the World Skate Games Italia,” Josh Byrd said. “It’s something I didn’t think would be possible in my 25 years of skateboarding, and I get to race with some of my best friends on the USA Slalom Skateboarding national team.”

Both also give back to the sport, even when they are not on the course themselves. Josh Byrd serves as the secretary for USA Slalom Skateboarding and is a founding member of organizations such as MS Grassroots Slaloms.

Sarah Byrd-Compton is a co-organizer of TN Slalom Skateboarding and is a member of Ladies Skate Nashville.

They will travel to Chieti, Italy, to compete for the USA Slalom Skateboarding National Team from September 11 to 15 at the World Skate Games.
