Cajun Fest returns May 21

MADISON — Cajun Fest, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church’s iconic annual tradition for three decades, returns May 21.

Cajun Fest has been a St. Francis tradition since 1986 and is the church’s largest fundraiser.

The event celebrates not only the history of the parish, but also members of the parish and the many diverse cultures they come from.

Mike Robinson, chairman for Cajun Fest, said all money raised this year is going towards replacing St. Anthony Hall, the oldest building on the church grounds.

“It’s very old and needs to be replaced,” Robinson said. “Church services used to be held there before they moved to St. Claire Hall and the current sanctuary.”

Robinson said Cajun Fest begins around 12 p.m. after the conclusion of 10:30 a.m. Mass, and lasts until 4 p.m.

“The Knights of Columbus are doing the cooking, and it’s a good selection of food,” Robinson said. “They’re making things like crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, pulled pork sandwiches, shrimp po-boys, chicken, snow cones, hot dogs, hamburgers and more. Enjoy the food along with live music by Waylon Thibodeaux, kids games, and prizes.”

Raffle tickets will also be on sale at the event, and prizes such as jewelry and a big screen TV are up for grabs.

“Come on out and enjoy the afternoon with your friends and family,” Robinson said. “It’s great fellowship, great food and great music. People are encouraged to bring a chair and a tent.”

Grand Knight Doug Leo of the St. Francis Knights of Columbus said he and the rest of the parish are excited to be back again.

“Not only is it one of our major fundraisers, but it’s a community and family event,” he said.
