Updated: Police identify victim in Ridgeland I-55 shooting

RIDGELAND — One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a shooting incident on I-55 southbound near the Renaissance Saturday afternoon, the authorities said.

Ridgeland police on Sunday identified the Saturday afternoon shooting victim as Lakendric Cortez Francis, 16, of Canton.

Ridgeland Police Lt. Brian Myers said authorities are still investigating the Saturday afternoon incident.

“This is a very fresh investigation and we are collecting information from all the sources we can,” Myers said Saturday afternoon.

The shooting incident happened when a vehicle, a black four-door Infiniti sedan traveling southbound, was shot into on I-55.

Myers said the driver, Francis, was deceased on the scene and that an adult passenger was sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The vehicle came to rest just in front of the Hyatt Place on I-55, Myers said.

He said no damage to other vehicles or injuries were reported.

Myers said all the shooting occurred on I-55 and they do not currently know the origin of the incident. He said they are not currently releasing any information on a potential suspect or suspect vehicle.
