Madison signs proclamation for law enforcement

MADISON — The city honored and celebrated first responders Tuesday night and signed a proclamation marking May 14 through May 20 Law Enforcement Appreciation Week.

Mayor Pro Tempore Guy Bowering signed the proclamation surrounded by Madison police officers, alderman, and other city officials.

Bowering said the proclamation honors the Madison Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Department, and other law enforcement agencies and first responders throughout Madison County.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and National Police Week was established by a joint Resolution of the United States Congress that same year.

The city of Madison’s proclamation states the Mayor and Board of Alderman recognize the hard work and dedication from local law enforcement and express their gratitude to all officers and first responders.

Madison Community Partners Director Amy Cummins said the city is doing multiple things to honor law enforcement during this time, including giving blue bows to city businesses, celebrating law enforcement appreciation night during Swing into Summer on May 18, where kids will make crafts and thank you cards for officers, and Community Bank will hold a lunch for law enforcement on May 19 in their parking lot.

“If other businesses would like to schedule something for our Madison PD, they can call the Community Partners office at (601) 856-7060 to schedule,” Cummins said.
