Two St. Joseph Catholic School seniors were named to this year’s All-Mississippi journalism team Friday – among 39 awards Bruins won in the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association’s annual high school student media awards.

Seniors Leah Clark and Jack Clements received the all-state honors. Clark serves as co-editor of The Bear Facts online news website, and Clements is news director of the student-produced weekly video newscast Bruin News Now.

“Our high school and middle school journalism students never cease to amaze me,” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, St. Joe principal.

“Every year, our students receive some of the highest honors in Mississippi for high school journalists,” Kinsey said. “This says a lot about the hard work and dedication of our student journalists, making our high school student media program the best in our state.”

Besides the All-Mississippi honors, St. Joe took 37 other awards – including six for first place and 31 as a finalist. First-place finishes included awards for stories that appeared on Bruin News Now or The Bear Facts website.

Carrington Fowler, a freshman, won Best Feature Story in the Best of Show competition for her video news package on the St. Joe fundraiser BruinTHON.  Wils Davis, a junior, won Best Sports Story in Best of Show for his video sports story on the St. Joe sailing team.

Other winning entries came in the Best of Mississippi competition. They included Clements for Best Sports Podcast; Clark for Best Review on The Bear Facts website; Bianca McCarty for Best Depth Reporting on The Bear Facts website; and Bruin News Now for Best Sports coverage.
