St. Joseph Catholic School seniors Andrew Doherty and Lockard Williams have been named semifinalists in the 69th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Doherty and Williams are two of more than 16,000 National Merit semifinalists. The two students will continue to compete for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million; the scholarships will be awarded next spring.

“We are so proud of these two young men who have worked hard for this all throughout their career at St. Joseph Catholic School,” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, principal of St. Joe. “William Doherty and Lockard Williams exemplify the best that St. Joe has to offer.”

St. Joseph Catholic School, founded in 1870 by the Sisters of Mercy, offers seventh- through 12th-grade students of all faith backgrounds a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church.

St. Joe, 308 New Mannsdale Road in Madison just west of the Interstate 55-Mississippi 463 interchange, is accredited by the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – the accrediting arm of Cognia.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that began 1955 and is administered by the private, non-profit National Merit Scholarship Corp. The program is expected to award more than 7,100 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million.

More than 1.3 million juniors in 21,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the 2022 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists includes high scoring entrants in each state.

“This honor says a lot about these two students’ dedication to academics,” Kinsey said. “It’s also one more example of how we at St. Joseph Catholic School prepare our students for college and life as an adult.”
