Shootout occurs at apartments
RIDGELAND — A Canton man who exchanged gunfire with police on Saturday during a domestic dispute at an apartment complex here remains in custody.
Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers said no officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. The investigation has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
The man, Keithannis Cortez Starks, 28, was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic violence and five counts of aggravated assault of a police officer. Starks is being held in the Madison County Detention Center with no bond issued at this time.
On Saturday, May 4, at about 9:14 p.m., Ridgeland Police were dispatched to Ridgeland Place Apartments, 879 William Boulevard, in reference to a domestic dispute.
“Officers attempted to make contact with the involved parties when officers were fired upon,” Myers said. “Shots were returned by officers and a stand-off ensued with the occupants barricaded in an apartment.”
The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody. Authorities identified the suspect as Starks. He was bleeding from his chest upon surrender and was transported to UMMC for medical attention, Myers said.
“The female party, who will not be identified, is safe,” Myers said.
RPD’s Special Response Team as well as the Madison County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT Team responded.
Madison Police and Madison SO personnel also assisted on the perimeter.
“The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded and processed the scene and will be investigating this incident,” Myers said. “I will not be able to comment further until MBI has concluded their investigation.”
