Second annual Ring of Faith race set for New Year ’s Eve

MADISON — The Knights of Columbus Council (KC) 9543 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church is putting on their second “Ring in Your Faith” 10K/5K run-walk this year on New Year’s Eve.

Doug Leo, Grand Knight of the council, said all proceeds go to KC service projects, which include work with Habitat for Humanity, Sunnybrook Children’s home, Canopy Children’s Home, seminarian education, and pro-life causes.

“When you run or walk, you’re ringing in a new year by supporting a variety of good causes,” Leo said.

The run begins on New Year’s Eve at 8 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Madison.

Knight of Columbus member Mark Noel is a veteran runner and said he finds both the 10K and 5K courses appealing.

“Both begin and end at the church,” Noel said. “The 10K goes from Tidewater to Old Canton and onto the multi-purpose trail, and the runner will get almost all the way to the overlook before turning back. There are hills and some beautiful scenery out there. The 5K takes place in the Tidewater neighborhood, which has lots of trees and is mostly flat, which will make for a fast course for the runners and a most enjoyable morning for our walkers.”

The first 150 registrants are guaranteed a t-shirt, and all who register can look forward to a mouth-watering post-race meal of pulled park, slaw, and black-eyed peas. An awards ceremony will take place once all runners and walkers have finished the course.

St. Francis Father Albeenreddy Vatti said this race brings people together to know the importance of being together as one community.

“It is all about our community spirit and reminds us that we are all one, irrespective of color, creed and sex,” Vatti said. “It is good for the body and mind. I enjoyed the event a year ago and will be participating again. I encourage everyone to participate. This is the best way to say goodbye to 2022 and welcome 2023, and I wish joy and happiness to all.”

The entry fee for the 10K run, 5K run, and 5K walk is $30. To register, visit msracetiming.com. Packet pickup will be at St. Francis of Assisi Church from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 30. Day-of registration and packet pickup will take place from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 31.
