Rotary Club kicks off with 33 new members

The Gluckstadt Rotary Club started earlier this summer with  33 members and hopes to harness that momentum as they continue to grow.

Members of the new club have shown “excitement” and meetings have been “up-beat” according to charter member Sam Stonestreet. 

Stonestreet is a teacher at Germantown High School and has lived in Gluckstadt for about 15 years. This is his first experience with Rotary, but he says the area has been in need of a quality civic organization for some time.

“There is a lot of opportunity for an organization like ours in this city and in the county in general,” Stonestreet said.

Stonestreet now handles pictures for the group and manages their social media pages.

Rotarian Mark Doiron, a member of the Madison-Ridgeland Rotary Club who helped the Gluckstadt Club with its chartering process, said he has been happy to see the club grow. The Gluckstadt Club received its charter on June 30 and held its first meeting on July 2.

He said this is the fifth club he has helped start and said though he looks forward to mentoring the club and its leadership, he thinks they are off to a strong start.

“We want to make sure they are successful,” Doiron said. “But I think they already have good leadership with good ideas.”

Meetings are held every other Wednesday at noon in the community room at St. Joseph Catholic Church on 127 Church Road.

At each meeting lunch is served and the club usually has a speaker give a presentation. Doiron said they have had speakers such as Mayor Walter Morrison and Eddie Payton, a professional football player and the brother of the late Walter Payton.

“We had a good turnout for Eddie Payton,” Doiron said.
