Ridgeland police warn of phone scam

Posted

Ridgeland Police will not call citizens and ask for gift cards, Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers said, after a scam came to light this week.

“I would just tell people to remember we will never ask you to pay fines over the phone or to get gift cards,” Myers said.

He said the Ridgeland Police Department had been informed of the scam.

Residents in the city are being called from a spoofed Ridgeland Police Department number informing them they have a warrant for their arrest.

They are telling the residents they need to buy a gift card and give them the numbers so the bill can be paid and the warrant cleared. Myers said this is an “old scam” and warned those who receive such a call not to fall for it.
