A Canton man has turned himself in to authorities for the slaying of a local rapper at a convenience store early last week.

Devante Xavier Johnson, 27, of Canton has been charged with murder in the July 26, shooting of Ramone Gutter, 32, in front of a convenience store.

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said that Gutter was shot one time in the groin on Sunday, July 26 at a store on west North Street. He said that they received several calls on the matter and that the first one came in around 11:45 a.m. Officers responded to the scene. 

Gutter was transported to University Mississippi Medical Center where he succumbed to his wounds the following day.

Brown said that the two men got into an “altercation with words” and Johnson shot Gutter. Johnson Turned himself in on Tuesday. Brown said that he still does not know exactly what the disagreement was about.

“We do not know that,” Brown said. “He did not tell us when he turned himself in on Tuesday,”

Gutter rapped under the name “Ray Gutta.”

Hardashsi Stanford, Gutter’s sister, organized an event at the Canton Multi-Purpose Complex on Friday where friends and family released red, gold, white and black balloons in his memory. Stanford has also been working with other friends and family to distribute buttons in her brother’s memory.
