Meade W. Mitchell of Ridgeland was installed as the 119th President of The Mississippi Bar on July 12 at the Bar’s Annual Business Session. The Mississippi Bar is composed of nearly 9,000 active members who are licensed to practice law in Mississippi.

Mitchell was raised in Pascagoula and graduated from Pascagoula High School. He attended the University of Mississippi where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Accounting (1990) and a Juris Doctorate (1993), both with honors.  He is an inductee into the Student Hall of Fame (1990) and served as an associate editor on the Mississippi Law Journal.  Mitchell clerked for United States District Judge Tom S. Lee before beginning law practice in Jackson. He is a partner at Butler Snow LLP, focusing on product liability, toxic tort, environmental, and transportation litigation.  

Mitchell has been active in The Mississippi Bar throughout his career. He recently chaired the Summer School for Lawyers Committee. Prior to that, he served as Chair of the Bar’s Litigation Section and as a Director of the Young Lawyers Division. He is a past Chair of the Bar Admissions Ceremony, Public Information, and Local Affiliates Committees and has volunteered on others. Mitchell was chosen as the Mississippi District Representative to the ABA Young Lawyers Division and received the Outstanding Young Lawyer of Mississippi Award (2004).  He was selected as a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar, Young Lawyers Division.

Mitchell also serves the bar on the local and national levels.  He was President of the Capital Area Bar Association (CABA) (2017) and President of the Jackson Young Lawyers (2000) and served on their Boards. 

Mitchell is the former President of the Jackson Exchange Club and is a member of the Jackson Rotary Club. He served on the Board of the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership, as Chair of Leadership Greater Jackson Board of Trustees, and as President of the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association. Mitchell is a volunteer for the Mississippi Museum of Art and served as a fundraising co-chair for the Mississippi Arthritis Foundation..  

Mitchell is a Bencher in the Charles Clark Inns of Court and was selected for membership in the International Association of Defense Counsel, the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, and the Trucking Industry Defense Association. He is an Eagle Scout, a member of the Lamar Order, and an inductee into Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa honorary associations.    

Mitchell and his wife, Holly,  attend Christ United Methodist Church. They are the parents of two children, William and Mary.
