Mayor’s Youth Council continues to expand

The Gluckstadt Mayor’s Youth Council is hoping to double in size going into its second year, organizers say.

Gluckstadt Mayor’s Youth Council founder and Executive Director Julia Lever said she looks forward to another year of the club she founded.

“It is a great organization for any students who are interested in the community and want to get involved,” Lever said.

The GMYC is taking applications for the upcoming school year through Aug. 31. Applications are available at Gluckstadt City Hall and online through the city’s website and app.

Applicants must be in ninth through 12th grade and have a 2.5 grade point average. The application process includes essays and a letter of recommendation from a teacher or community leader.

Lever said 14 of their first fifteen members attended Germantown High School. One is a student at Jackson Academy. She said students from any school are encouraged to apply as long as they meet the criteria and live in or around Gluckstadt.

“We want to broaden our representation in local schools,” Lever said.

Lever said she has set a goal of getting 30 members for GMYC.

On June 28, the GMYC held a banquet at the St. Joseph Catholic Church to celebrate a successful first year.

“Congratulations to the Mayor's Youth Council who celebrated their first year,’ A statement from the Gluckstadt Madison Business Alliance reads. “These High School students made history as the first members and made a difference in our community throughout the year.”

Lever said the city offers a $500 scholarship to a senior who is in the council. This year’s recipient was Ashton Chigbo.

“Ashtun always jumped in with a smile on his face,” Lever said. “We all know he is going to be successful and are happy to know him.”

This year GMYC members volunteered in the Gluckstadt Christmas Parade, hosted a coat drive, held a car-wash fundraiser which funded their trip to the state Mayor's Youth Council meeting and completed C.E.R.T. training.
