Son of former narcotics officer arrested in drug investigation

The son of a former top narcotics officer in Mississippi has been arrested in connection with an ongoing drug investigation in Ridgeland.

John Morgan Dowdy, 27, was arrested and charged with trafficking of a controlled substance, conspiracy and intent to “sell, trade or barter” drugs.

Jail records say that Dowdy was arrested by the Ridgeland Police Department on Feb. 25, and was booked into the Madison County Detention Center around 2:55 a.m.

RPD Lt. Brian Myers said Dowdy’s arrest came as part of a larger investigation.

“This is an active ongoing investigation involving a large seizure of controlled substances,” Myers said. “I will confirm that Dowdy has been arrested.” 

Dowdy is no longer on the Madison County Detention Center inmate roster.

Dowdy is the son of former Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director John Dowdy Jr.

The Clarion Ledger reported in October 2019 that Dowdy had been arrested on drug charges in August of that year. Dowdy, 26 at the time, was arrested in Byram with 60 doses of opioid pain relievers and a fraudulent prescription.

The Ledger reported that Byram police had said the case was turned over to MBN and an MBN spokesman at the time had said the case was being handled by BPD.
