Madison Lions Club hosting golf fundraiser
The Madison Lions Club is hosting their third annual golf tournament to raise money to fund causes like diabetes awareness, children’s cancer research, and more.
Betsy Landers, director of Madison Lion’s golf tournament, said the event is a club fundraiser that aims to help the people of Mississippi in a multitude of ways.
“The Madison Lions Club is part of the International Lions Club, which is one of the world’s largest service organizations,” Landers said. “We do things like vision screenings for children in Madison, from six months old to high schoolers, awareness for diabetes, and we have a lot of support for veterans. We also recently started a $3000 scholarship for a high school senior going to a Mississippi university or college.”
The Lion’s Club foundation also aids in preventing avoidable blindness, world hunger, helping the environment, providing young people and their educators with tools to make positive choices and resist drugs and alcohol, and helping then learn through service and become healthy young men and women, and provides funding to address preparedness and immediate needs that allow Lions and their partners to be among the first on the scene in the wake of the world’s most devastating hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and other disasters.
The club works face to face with the people they serve and supports the wide variety of humanitarian efforts and works to give grants to increase their scale and effectiveness.
The third annual golf tournament is set for Thursday, June 15 at 8 a.m. at the Lake Caroline Golf Club.
Landers said the tournament is open to anyone, and admission is $125.
“With admission you get a round of golf, lunch, and a chance at the ‘Million Dollar Shot,’” Landers said. “If you’re not with your own team, you can sign up as an individual and you will be automatically assigned to a team.”
Prize money is up for grabs for the top three teams ($1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third). There are also hole-in-one prizes on three of the Par 3 holes, which include a trip for two to the 2024 Masters, a new golf cart, and two tickets to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
The “Million Dollar Shot” will take place on the 18th hole at the beginning of the tournament. Every participant in the tournament will have their name placed in a hat, and when a name is drawn, they will ride down to the 18th hole and take their shot.
“If you make the shot, you win a million dollars,” Landers said. “You only have one shot that comes with admission, but if you want more chances, you can buy them for $10 each. The million dollars comes from an insurance package the Lion’s Club purchased.”
The third annual Madison Lions Club tournament begins on June 15 at 118 Caroline Club Circle in Madison.
