GLUCKSTADT — A Clinton construction firm accidentally dumped limestone on I-55 here, holding up traffic two mornings in a row this week.

According to Gluckstadt Police Chief Barry Hale, Birdsong Construction Company had a truck accidentally dump a load of limestone at the Gluckstadt exit at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10.

The mess took an hour for crews from Birdsong and the Mississippi Department of Transportation to clean up.

“It shut down traffic briefly,” Hale said. He noted it took about an hour for GPD to completely clear the scene.

Motorists are warned that a dust cloud could linger over the area for some time.

“The lingering effects of this incident might include a dust cloud in the area,” Hale said.

The previous morning, the same Birdsong truck had accidentally dropped a load of limestone on the roadway within a mile of the Gluckstadt exit at about 10:30 a.m., causing similar problems.

“It was the same truck in about the same place,” Hale said.

Hale said both incidents are believed to be an accident at this time and does not expect charges for the firm or the driver. He said Birdsong is looking into the issue.
