Law student interning at Supreme Court

Law student Karl W. Hatten of Gluckstadt began work on June 3 as a summer intern in the chambers of Mississippi Supreme Court Presiding Justice Jim Kitchens.

Hatten is pursuing a law degree from the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in Dallas, Texas.  He will begin his third year of law school this fall. He previously served as staff editor of the International Law Review Association. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and a Bachelor of Music in voice performance at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2020. Hatten grew up in Jackson and graduated from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.

Hatten worked last summer as an intern in the Grand Prairie, Texas, city attorney’s office and in the Dallas law firm of Cherry Petersen Albert. Before entering law school, he worked as a bank teller in Oklahoma City and as an insurance customer service representative in Norman.  He also worked in a wine store in Norman while pursuing his undergraduate degree.

He performed  in a vocal ensemble and served as a soloist and cantor at St. Thomas More University Parish in Norman for five years. He pursued interests in foreign language, opera,  world religion and travel with a summer French language immersion tour in France and an internship with the Bregenz Opera Festival in Austria in 2017.  In summer 2019, he studied in London  and performed in concerts with Opera Viva in Verona, Italy.
