I-55 bridge closures are Thursday night and in June
Thursday night marks the last night of overnight lane closures on I-55 at U.S. 51 until June.
Both I-55 bridges over U.S. 51 and the CNIC Railroad in Madison County will have overnight closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Thursday evening (May 23) while crews perform a hybrid polymer concrete overlay as part of ongoing bridge repair work.
“Digital message signs are in place leading up to the closure to alert motorists of the overnight lane closures,” MDOT spokesman Michael Flood said. “We’re asking drivers to drive slow, stay alert and anticipate potential delays during peak travel.”
The work started on Monday, May 20.
“During operating hours, drivers should anticipate moderate delays at peak travel times. Digital message boards are currently in place to alert drivers of the potential delays,” Flood said. “I would anticipate a moderate traffic impact during peak travel times, nothing major.”
The project began in March, and the scope of repairs includes replacement of bridge bearings, repair of spalled areas with epoxy mortar, installation of hybrid polymer concrete overlay, re-sealing of bridge joints, and fencing installation.
The work requires lane closures that are scheduled during nighttime hours and on weekends to “limit impact to traffic.”
Bridge preservation projects take place often on bridges across the state, Flood said. This $2.4 million contract was awarded to Key, LLC and is anticipated to be complete this fall, he said.
Work is also scheduled to take place over the weekends of June 1 and June 8, beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday until 6 a.m. on Monday each weekend.
