Gluckstadt swears in first municipal judge

City officials swore in their first municipal court judge and added two new police officers Tuesday night. 

The Hon. Judge John G. “Trae” Sims III, joined by his wife Kim Sims, was sworn in first. 

Before accepting his current position, Sims formerly served as prosecutor and assistant city attorney for the city of Madison and recently served as general counsel for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

After taking the Oath to Office, Sims confirmed Gluckstadt’s first official court date is Nov. 7. 

“Our court clerk tells me that we can expect to be very busy that day,” Sims said. 

The city then swore in two new police officers, Kelly Jones and Eric Huff, after Gluckstadt Police Chief Wendell Watts introduced them to the board. 

In other matters, the board: 

• Unanimously approved the hiring of part-time and full-time reserve officers for $17 an hour. 

• Unanimously approved the purchase of mobile and handheld radios from Madison County Emergency Management for officers. 

• Unanimously approved securing six additional surplus police vehicles from Madison County for reserve and part-time officers for $100 a vehicle. 

• Unanimously approved adding a $2 fee on all traffic citations to help fund the Crime Stoppers program. 

• Unanimously approved housing prisoners at the Madison County Detention Center for $21 a day. 

• Approved an application for a conditional use permit for John Gooch Storage Lot 5 on Business Park Drive with a 3-2 vote. 

• Approved the site plan for John Gooch Storage Lot 5 on Business Park Drive with a 3-2 vote. 

• Unanimously approved a site plan for 911 Restoration at the Corner of Church Road and Old Jackson Road. 

• Unanimously approved a site plan for Gluckstadt Retail Center on Gluckstadt Road. 

• Unanimously approved a request to name an access road off Calhoun Station Parkway Trustmark Drive.
