Flora’s Pope receives Beautification Award

FLORA — Barbie Pope, General Manager of Flora’s popular Dave’s Triple B: Barbecue, Beer & Blues Restaurant, has been named the first recipient of Flora's  annual Main Street Beautification Award.

Pope took it upon herself to seed and cultivate a cutting garden of various sunflowers and a wide variety of zinnias adjacent to the restaurants west wall. Her efforts did not go unnoticed by Friends Of Flora, a non-profit civic group made up of Flora, citizens and business leaders. The purpose of the Friends of Flora organization (FOF) is to engage & cultivate interest in the town of Flora, Mississippi, and its history through historic preservation and community development.

In the last seven years the quaint little Mississippi town of Flora has been the focus of a spectacular renaissance that harkens back to it’s heyday during the years following the Civil War. Instead of cotton bales and bushels of soy beans that defined life in early Flora, the 21st century edition is still anchored somewhat in agriculture, but with a decidedly culinary twist. Within walking distance of Main Street one would find both Salad Days Hydroponic Farm and Two Dog Farms, the latter a traditional truck farm. Both compliment the growing number of retail and restaurant establishments found on Main Street and environs, including Railroad Pizza, The Flora Butcher, Bill’s Creole & Steak Depot, The Corner Market, The Cotton & Tumbleweed Lifestyle Market Place, The Blue Rooster Restaurant, Wisteria Lane Florist & Gifts, Los Molcajetes Mexican Restaurant, Raines Fine Wines & Rare Spirits. Dave’s Barbecue, Beer & Blues, Annie M’s Plate Lunch Restaurant and Cotton Exchange Liquors.

As a result Flora is not just a thoroughfare anymore, but a destination for people throughout the state of Mississippi.
