A Washington County man has been charged with a murder in Madison County.

The man, Dawton Gage Whatley, 19, was charged with the murder of 28-year-old Lemetrius Hollins in a subdivision east of Madison off of Old Rice Road.

Whatley also faces charges in Washington County for felony domestic aggravated assault.

He was arrested in Washington County on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Heath Hall said they received a call from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office requesting a welfare check at 101 Haley Creek Drive on Monday, Feb. 5, at 2:49 p.m.

Deputies went to the residence and found Hollins with a fatal gunshot wound.

According to Hall, Hollins was a Madison County resident. He said investigators believe Whatley has lived here in the past but are not sure of his exact address.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Billy Barber said he is “excited” that communication between the two agencies led to solving a serious crime.

Barber said during their investigation they received information that Whatley may have harmed someone in Madison County at the Haley Creek address and contacted MCSO to perform the welfare check.

“I am glad we were able to work with Madison County to get this crime solved,” Barber said.

Madison County Detention Center records show Whatley was brought into custody here on Feb. 8.
