The Jackson man who dragged a Madison police officer with his car last April during a traffic stop pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison this week.

Tyrone Jerrell Staten, 21, of Jackson, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony evasion.

Madison County Circuit Judge Steve Ratcliff sentenced Staten to 25 years with 10 years suspended.

Staten will serve his remaining 15 years in the custody of MDOC and when released will be placed on probation.

Officer McCarra in April 2021 spotted a car associated with a shoplifting incident from the previous day stopped at a red light at the corner of Bozeman Road and Highway 463.

McCarra pulled the vehicle over and asked Staten to step out of the car, but Staten refused and proceeded to roll up his window.

The officer reached in to try and unlock the door, but Staten continued to roll up the window and sped off with McCarra’s hand trapped inside.

Staten increased speed and fled toward I-55 dragging the officer with him until McCarra was able to escape.

Staten continued at a high-speed rate on I-55 south until officers in pursuit forced the car off the road near the 106 mile marker at Madison Avenue.

Staten and McCarra were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries and later released.
