Christmas concert set for this Sunday

MADISON — St. Joseph Catholic School’s popular annual Christmas concert “Gifts of the Season” is returning to the school’s Fine Arts theatre stage for a single performance on Dec. 11.

“‘Gifts of the Season’ is not to be missed,” said St. Joe principal Dr. Dena Kinsey. “These students, musicians, singers and dancers have been working so hard behind the scenes preparing for this event. When you see it all come together on the big stage, it’s well-worth the trip.”

Student musicians, singers, and dancers, including the Spirit Steppers, an award winning dance team at St. Joe, have been rehearsing for “Gifts of the Season” for weeks. It will feature traditional and contemporary holiday music, and is one of several events the St. Joe Fine Arts department puts on every year in the state-of-the-art auditorium.

St. Joe Band Director Ronnie Russell said the concert is something he looks forward to every year.

“This is a family concert that will put a smile on your face and place you and your family in the Christmas spirit,” Russell said. “The fact that talented St. Joe students are performing makes this event that much more enjoyable and meaningful.”

Last month, students performed “A Christmas Story,” and will perform the hit musical “Footloose” in the spring.

Vicki Runnels, chair of the Fine Arts Department, said the program offers students a chance to discover and develop talent they didn’t realize they had.

“Attend any of the productions or concerts, and you will see what I mean,” Runnels said.

Along with fun impromptu performances by band members during intermission, guests can purchase hand-crafted Christmas ornaments created by students. They can also visit Joesy’s, the Fine Arts Department store that sells student-created artwork. The store is also open by appointment if guests don’t have time to visit during the concert.

“Gifts of the Season” takes place on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. and admission is $10. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.
