Chapel of the Cross First Annual Concert Series

Chapel of the Cross First Annual Concert Series

Posted

This year, the Chapel of the Cross is hosting the first of what is to be an annual concert series,
Concerts in the Country.

Considering the talent and hard work of the music director, Dr. Edward
Dacus, as well as the recent installation of our two-manual, twenty-two stop Noak organ, Chapel of the Cross is
certain that this series is the beginning of a beloved tradition for parish members and Mississippi
music lovers alike. It will consist of four events, all taking place at 5:00pm in the Chapel of the
Resurrection.

The series begins on October 23rd with a Choral Evensong, followed by an organ recital by

Kipp Gill of Macon, Georgia. Kipp is the organist and choirmaster of All-Saints Episcopal
church in Warner-Robins, Georgia, and he recently earned a Master of Music in organ
performance from Mercer University. Our chapel will be one of many stops he makes as he
performs throughout the southeast.

Members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will join the choir and guest soloists on
December 4th for An Advent Offering. They will celebrate the season with pieces by J.S. Bach
and Franz Joseph Hayden. On January 15th, Dr. Phyllis Lewis-Hale, soprano and Associate
professor of Music at Jackson State University, will present An Evening of Spirituals. She’ll be
accompanied on the piano by another Jackson State faculty member, Jerry Smith. To close out
the series, we have The Mississippi Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet treating the crowd to ‘A Brass
Extravaganza’ on April 30th.

The concerts are funded by Friends of Music of the Chapel of the Cross, and there will be no
admissions fee for any of the events. There will also be a reception held in the parish hall after every concert in this
series.
