It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Carol Mercier Newman of Madison, MS on December 19, 2023.  Mrs. Newman was 85 years of age.  Carol was born on December 18, 1938, to Howard and Ruby Wilson Mercier of McComb, MS.  She enjoyed a successful career in nursing for 39 years in Metairie, LA and Jackson, MS.

In addition to being a caring and dedicated healthcare professional, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  She was a lifelong Baptist and a member of the First Baptist Church of Madison, MS since 1993.  She loved her church family and enjoyed the ministries and committees she served on, most notably her participation in the special ministry to the Nichols Nursing Center of Madison for 13 years.  Carol loved being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, traveling, reading and especially playing bridge, where she made many special friends over the years.

Mrs. Newman is survived by her three children, Monty Newman, Jr. of Flowood, MS, Kevin Newman (Steve Greenough) of Madison, Cheryl Murray (Will) of Madison; five grandchildren, Alicia and Emily Newman of Minnesota, Brewer, Harrison and Bryson Murray of Madison; two great granddaughters, Mikayla and Olivia Newman of Minnesota; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Newman is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Monty Newman, Sr. who the Lord called home in 1997; her parents, her brothers, Alfred Ray Mercier, James Mercier, and Howard Lynn Mercier; and sisters, Allie Mercier Gill, Barbara Ann Thornton, and Mary Ellen Dickerson.

A visitation was held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Madison, MS, followed by a service at 11:00 AM. A graveside service was at Gillsburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Gillsburg, MS at 1:00 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Madison, MS, 2100 Main Street, Madison, MS  39110.

Sebrell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
