CANTON- A juvenile has been arrested in connection with a vehicle theft reported at the beginning of the month, authorities say,

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said a 15-year-old male has been arrested in connection with a Hyundai Sonata reported stolen from a residence on May Street in the early morning hours of Thursday, Nov. 2, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Investigators tracked the suspect to his residence and effected an arrest on Friday, Nov. 3, in the afternoon.

Brown said the case has been handed over to youth court.

According to CPD, Canton saw a rash of attempts last month and at the beginning of November of attempted thefts of Kia and Hyundai vehicles made between 2011 and 2021.

“We want to tell people to be mindful specifically if you drive one of these vehicles,” Brown said.

CPD officials strongly recommend that if you own one of these vehicles you should take extra precautions to secure your vehicle. They recommend that vehicle owners use additional equipment to lock the steering wheel or other methods to disable the engine.

“Thieves are using social media to inform others on how to steal these Kia and Hyundai models,” a statement from CPD warns.
