A Canton woman was fatally injured in a single-car accident just north of the Highway 463 exit Monday night.

The woman has been identified as Ira D. Fuquay, 51, of Canton, according to Madison Police Captain Kevin Newman.

“The Madison Police Department extends its prayers and condolences to Ms. Fuquay’s family, friends, and associates,” Newman said.

On Monday, June 3, at about 10:23 p.m., the Madison Police Department responded to a one-car accident on I-55 northbound near mile marker 109.

First responders discovered that a Honda Accord had left the interstate and entered the median, and flipped, according to Newman.

“The driver of the Honda Accord was ejected during the traffic crash and was deceased on the scene,” Newman said. “There were no other occupants in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the traffic crash.”

Witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling northbound on the Interstate when it suddenly left the roadway entering into the center median area, Newman said. Upon crossing the median, the vehicle struck a concrete barrier at the opposite southbound lanes. Newman said the vehicle overturned in the median as a result of the accident.

The crash is currently under investigation by fatality crash investigators from the Madison Police Department Traffic Division.
