A Velma Jackson senior was fatally injured in a single-car wreck Sunday morning near Camden in rural northeastern Madison County, the authorities said.

Madison County Coroner Alex Breeland identified the victim as Byron Perry, 18.

“Such a smart and funny young man,” Toreka Chambers-Brown wrote on Facebook.

Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Heath Hall said the wreck was reported at 9:52 a.m. on Loring Road near the Truitt Road intersection.

“It is under investigation,” Hall said.

Breeland said Perry was a passenger in the vehicle that rolled over.

Authorities have not released any further information regarding who else was in the car or the extent of their injuries.

Madison County School District officials confirmed Tuesday that Perry was a student at Velma Jackson High School. In a statement they said counseling staff would be made available to VJHS students, faculty and staff.

“It is with great sadness that the Madison County Schools family mourns the tragic loss of Velma Jackson High School senior Bryon Perry,” the statement posted on Facebook said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Additional counseling staff is on campus to support students, faculty, and sxtaff during this difficult time.”
