RIDGELAND — UPS is slated to bring 161 jobs with an annual wage of $57,000 to Madison County with a $28.6 million corporate investment in a new package distribution facility here.

Mayor Gene F. McGee said that the city welcomes United Parcel Services Inc. to the city after they made an announcement in conjunction with the Madison County Economic Development Authority last Thursday, Oct. 29. The facility will be located in the Highland Colony 220 Business Park on West Marketridge Drive.

“We welcome UPS to the City of Ridgeland,” McGee said. “We are glad that UPS made the strategic decision to locate in our Highland Colony 220 Business Park, which provides them ease of transporting goods from their Jackson Distribution Center to their final destination.”

Cher Porties, president, UPS Mid South District, said that UPS is one of the world’s largest package delivery companies and provides a broad range of “integrated logistics solutions” for more than 220 countries and territories. Porties said that the new UPS operations in Ridgeland will accommodate a fleet of more than 105 package delivery vehicles and serve as "last-mile" package distribution.

“This new UPS facility will provide additional pickup and delivery services to our customers in Madison County, improving both speed and reliability,” Porties said. “As a partner in the community, we look forward to bringing jobs that pay well to the Ridgeland area.”

Ridgeland Community Development Director Alan Hart said that he looked forward to welcoming the company to the area.

“I’m excited for UPS, Madison County, and Ridgeland that this project will add local good paying jobs to our economy. This project is right in line with the goals established by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen centered around growing our city.”

Currently in the design phase, construction on the 87,500 square foot facility is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2021.

“The Madison County Board of Supervisors is glad to welcome UPS to Madison County, said Gerald Steen, president. “We appreciate the leadership that MCEDA provided during the site selection and incentives process. Economic Development is a team sport, and we are grateful for all of the partners involved in making this project a reality in Ridgeland/Madison County.”

The Ridgeland facility is part of a larger $60 million in investments throughout the state that will come from bonds issued by the Mississippi Business Finance Corporation. The bonds will allow MBFC to track the corporation's expenditures and then use that data to issue sales and use exemptions as the company is eligible.

According to a copy of the minutes from their May 13 meeting, the investments are expected to generate around 233 jobs, including the ones in Ridgeland. They currently employ 2,477 individuals statewide.

Records from the meeting show that they expect to spend about $1.1 million on land purchases and $14.3 million for construction on the Ridgeland facility. Another $44.6 million is slated for equipment at facilities across the state.

Porties said that interested job seekers can visit www.upsjobs.com to begin the application process for available positions, including seasonal help. He said many of the expected opportunities come with great pay and benefits, including healthcare and retirement benefits.
