A project to improve the Chisha Foka Multi-Use Trail along the Natchez Trace Parkway began last week and will close the trail in segments.

Ridgeland officials said they appreciate the work being done on just over three miles of the trail.

“The City is excited to hear about the needed work,” a statement from the city said. “Providing safe recreational trails for our citizens and visitors is of vital importance and we greatly appreciate the National Park Service’s resources for enhancing this special area of the City.”

Four separate sections of the trail will close as work progresses, according to Facility Manager Mark Holley with the National Park Service.

Cracks and holes in the pavement have been patched but still could pose a danger to cyclists, especially.

The first section to closes is from Old Canton Road to the Reservoir overlook. The closure, which includes the Reservoir Overlook Parking area, began Monday, Feb. 10 and is expected to continue through early next week depending on weather and construction progress.

“The project will consist of full depth milling and placement of a new asphalt surface across four sections of trail, totaling 3.5 miles,” Holley said, “The closures are necessary for the safety of visitors and workers. Ultimately the work will provide a smoother and more enjoyable trail for pedestrians and bicyclists.”

Barricades will be in place and signs posted to mark the closed area. Holley said individuals found in the closed area may be subject to citation.

“Large trucks and heavy equipment will be working in tight spaces along the trail, making it difficult to see pedestrians,” Holley warned.

Once work is completed on the first section of trail it will reopen, and the next section will close. Visitors should anticipate future closures from Old Canton Road to Rice Road, Rice Road to I-55, and Old Agency Road to the Southern Terminus of the trail.

Construction updates will be posted on www.nps.gov/natr or the Natchez Trace Parkway Facebook page.
