Traffic was rerouted on I-55 at the Old Agency Road exit for almost two hours Monday afternoon after a truck caring waste from a construction site flipped over in the roadway.

Cpl. Kelly Chapin with the Ridgeland Police Department said they received the call about 1:24 p.m. that a truck had turned over in the interstate.

“He was coming off Old Agency and onto I-55 when the whole truck flipped over on the driver side,” Chapin said.

He said it took about an hour and 48 minutes to clear the roadway. The roadway was cleared at 3:13 p.m.

He said that much of the southbound traffic was blocked for the duration but that they were able to keep some cars moving along the shoulder and were able to direct other vehicles onto a detour off of the interstate.

Chapin said that driver was transported to the hospital for a checkup but that nothing other than minor injuries were reported.

The truck was said to be carrying waste from a construction site including asphalt, sheetrock and lumber.

Chapin said the actual clean up took less than 30 minutes when they were able to get the equipment off of the roadway.
