CANTON — A Texas man who was a person of interest in a weekend shooting that left one man dead turned himself in to police on Saturday.

The man, Tyrese Kendall Dixon, 25, of Texas, turned himself in to the Canton Police Department at about 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, Police Chief Otha Brown said.

Dixon has been charged with the murder of 20-year-old Devonta Johnson. Brown said Dixon also faces a charge of possession of a stolen firearm. Brown said the stolen gun was found in Dixon’s vehicle and is believed to be the murder weapon.

Brown said they are still trying to gather all the details of what happened but have learned that Dixon was meeting Johnson to retrieve some unspecified items from his car.

“It is an ongoing investigation,” Brown said.

Johnson was reportedly shot twice in the chest at the Canton Estates Apartment complex off of Ricks Drive.

The shooting was reported at 12:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, Brown said. He said officers arrived on the scene within minutes to find Johnson face down on a sidewalk inside the front entrance of the complex.

According to Brown, Dixon was identified as a suspect based on police cameras that were in the area due to repeated reports of gunfire in the area of the apartment complex.
