MADISON — St. Joseph Catholic School students raised nearly $20,000 to fund care and aid to children in need last weekend.

Students raised the money during St. Joe’s annual BruinTHON event, a seven-hour on-your-feet marathon fundraiser driven by students.

The event acts as the culmination of a year-long effort to help Children’s of Mississippi (formerly Batson Children’s Hospital). The event took place on Friday, April 28 in the St. Joe gymnasium.

This year, students raised $19,655, breaking last year’s record of $16,834. The celebration was led by students like Maurice Greenwood, Amari Alexander, Ava Kathryn Stephen (BruinTHON chair), Gia Picarella, Paige Loyacono, Ainsley D’Alfonso, Daniel Dear, Adriana Terrazas, Maddie-Claire Spence, and J.J. Tice.

St. Joe principal Dr. Dena Kinsey said she is incredibly proud of her students and their efforts to help children in need.

“Led by a strong group of seniors, this year’s record haul of more than $19,000 shows how committed our school and students are to community service,” Kinsey said.

BruinTHON is part of a nationwide effort in which students at more than 150 high schools and colleges across the country raise money to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Children’s of Mississippi is the state’s only children’s hospital.
