MADISON — Christmas is arriving early this year at St. Joseph Catholic School with student actors performing the classic comedy “A Christmas Story” this weekend.

The play is adapted from the 1983 classic film of the same name, which focuses on Ralphie Parker and his family during Christmastime in Hammond, Indiana. All Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle.

“A Christmas Story” is based on writings in Jean Shepherd’s 1966 book, and stars Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin.

The film has become a cult classic and is shown in a marathon yearly on TNT and TBS. Both the film and play feature a series of vignettes from Ralphie’s life, including his experience with his air rifle.

Student actors from St. Joe have been busy rehearsing the play for weeks since the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

Director Leslie Harkins said the play is heart-warming, filled with laughs, and will be a great time for everyone.

“Our student performers and crew will bring this unforgettable story to life here on the big stage,” Harkins said. “With Thanksgiving just a few weeks away and Christmas coming next, I can’t think of a better way to get in the holiday mode than by taking in this fun play.”

St. Joe Principal Dr. Dena Kinsey said the play will be a fun night for the entire family.

“We have such a great Fine Arts Department and this play is a wonderful way to showcase the talented students who have worked so long and hard to bring this story to life,” Kinsey said.

Performances of “A Christmas Story” begin Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m., and runs through Saturday, Nov. 12 (7 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 13 (2 p.m.) in the St. Joe Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is $12, and free to St. Joe students. Attendees from St. Anthony, St. Richard, and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic schools get in free if they were their school shirts. Tickets will be on sale at the box office the day of the performance.

“A Christmas Story” is the first of two Christmas performances at St. Joe, with the other being their annual “Gifts of the Season” concert coming on Dec. 11.
