Square Play Cafe offers up fun for moms, kids

The Square Play Cafe offers kids the unique opportunity to play in a mock downtown setting while their parents take a load off, sip a coffee and watch.

The new play place has been open for about a month, co-owner Brittany Waddell said.

Waddell owns the place, located on Kimball Drive next to the Timber Tavern, with her co-owners and best friends Tina Williams and McKinley Wells. Waddell said the idea came while McKinley was working in the area as a nanny.

“There just wasn’t a’lot for young kids to do during the day,” Waddell said. “We saw a desperate need in the community.”

Now they have between 25 and 30 members but welcome walk-ins every day.

“We probably average about 20 kids coming through our doors on a daily basis,” Waddell said.

Moms can come in for the free Wi-Fi or to enjoy a well-crafted cup of coffee but kids are invited to play in a fully-realized town complete with play stations themed after a vet clinic, police station, diner, market, school, construction zone, and others.

“We did not realize the impact this would have on moms having something to do during the day with their kids,” Waddell said. “You can easily watch your kids from pretty much any viewpoint in the playroom.”

Square Play Cafe is usually closed on the weekends for private parties but is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information call (601) 612-0795.
