Seniors gain insight on Madison city government

MADISON — Hartfield Academy senior Madeline Lee learned new things about what goes on in her city behind the scenes after attending Tuesday’s meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.

“The biggest thing I got out of this meeting is that I didn’t realize they cover things like property,” Lee said. “I didn’t know they discussed these kinds of things, like when they covered the development on the agenda about the Reunion plat.”

Lee, along with five other seniors from Hartfield, attended the Feb. 16 meeting for an assignment in their political science dual-credit course at Belhaven University.

Their assignment was to attend a local government meeting and get a better understanding of what happens in the meeting and what the board members go over and vote on.

All the seniors got to see how things worked behind the scenes in Madison and how everything comes together for the city.

Mayor Mary Hawkins-Butler kicked off the meeting by recognizing the students, which included Lee, Morgan Dotson, Andi Waterbury, Emily Humphreys, Jenna Hart, and Brookelynn Evans

“Our assignment is that after the meeting, we have to write a three-page paper on what we learned from it and what we thought about the experience,” Lee said.

“Even though you don’t really think about things that are proposed, I learned that they are a big deal.”
