Security guard shot execution-style

CANTON — An "execution-style" murder of an 85-year-old security guard at a Canton apartment complex late Sunday night remains under investigation with few details released by law enforcement.

David Herrin was shot "multiple times" in his vehicle Sunday night at Canton Estate Apartments where he worked as a security guard, said Heath Hall, a spokesman for the Madison County Sheriff's Department. He said they received a call about 11:20 p.m.

"The deputy found the man in a vehicle and determined he was shot multiple times at close range," Hall said. "It was an execution-style murder."

Herrin was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hall.

Hall said that the case is under investigation. He said that they are interviewing witnesses and viewing security footage from the scene. Monday Hall said the best description of they have the suspect is that it is a black male wearing dark clothes.

This case remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay for Herrin's funeral expenses. As of Wednesday, approximately $2,500 of the $3,000 goal had been raised by over 30 people.
