A Ridgeland Police officer had to be extracated from his vehicle Wednesday when a truck hit his police cruiser from behind on the I-220 to I-55, authorities said.

Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers said the officer was hit from behind by a truck driving at “a high rate of speed” around 4 p.m. As of 6:09 p.m., Myers said the ramp was still closed.

The officer had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to a local hospital as was the other driver.

Myer said the officer was able to “walk away” from the wreck and has been released from the hospital but ddi not have an update on the other driver’s injuries as of Wednesday evening.

“We are pleased our officer is going to be okay and pleased there were no fatalities,” Myers said.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the wreck as a possible DUI, though no charges have been filed at the time this story was written.

Myers offered a “special thanks” to the Madison Police Department and MCSO for responding to this incident along with RPD officers.
