A Tuscaloosa man is awaiting extradition after Ridgeland Police arrested him on a warrant for murder in Alabama.

Tuscaloosa Police announced last week that Eric Markett Hayward, 23, was taken into custody by the Ridgeland Police Department in Mississippi Tuesday.

Ridgeland police say the suspect was pulled over July 20 around 8:45 p.m. for having only one headlight. Hayward provided the officer his ID, which when run showed an outstanding arrest warrant for murder.

Hayward was taken into custody without incident. Police say a firearm was recovered from the vehicle.

Ridgeland Police Lt. Tony Willridge said that Hayward is in the Madison County Detention Center awaiting an extradition trial being handled by the District Attorney's office. Willridge said that he could not comment further on the incident including the circumstances of Hayward’s arrest.

“I don’t want to get ahead of the investigation in Alabama by releasing any information at this time,” Willridge said.

Tuscaloosa investigators had asked agencies across the region to be on the lookout for Hayward, wanted for murder in the death of Leonna Tucker, 21.

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit will continue the ongoing investigation.
