Reward offered in guard’s murder

The employer of an elderly security guard slain execution-style at a Canton apartment building last week has offered a reward for information connecting investigators to his killer.

Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker announced Wednesday that S & S Management Group, LLC, which operates as Guard One Security in Mississippi, has notified him of a $5,000 reward to be used for information leading to the arrest of the individual or individuals who killed David Herrin last week in Madison County. Herron was a Guard One employee.

“We are very thankful that Guard One Security has offered this reward,” Tucker said. “It can enhance our investigatory process and assist in arresting the individual(s) who killed someone wearing the badge execution style.” 

Herrin, 85, was shot “multiple times” in his vehicle the night of Sunday, June 14, at Canton Estate Apartments where he worked as a security guard, said Heath Hall, a spokesman for the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.  He said they received a call about 11:20 p.m.

“The deputy found the man in a vehicle and determined he was shot multiple times at close range,” Hall said. “It was an execution-style murder.”

Herrin was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hall.

Hall said that the case is under investigation. He said that they are interviewing witnesses and viewing security footage from the scene. Hall said the best description of they have the suspect is that it is a black male wearing dark clothes.

“We have resources working on finding this individual(s) on the daily basis and we are committed to making sure justice prevails,” Tucker said. “We hope that someone has information regarding David Herrin’s death, and that they will come forward.”

This case remains under investigation.

George David Herrin was born November 13, 1934, in Collins. He attended Salem High School and Jones County Community College. He left Collins to join the Army and was stationed in Alaska and Texas.

Herrin had a career in the financial industry. He retired from Financial Services of Mississippi after 20 years. “Not being one to just sit around the house, David worked part time as a security guard. Unfortunately, it was his hard work ethic that led to his fatality,” his family said.

He was faithful and active member of First Baptist Church of Richland where his memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on June 27. He was preceded in death by a son, Mike. He is survived by a daughter Tara of Birmingham.
