Canton City school buses saw slow downs and some students cut off from bus routes completely Wednesday morning after their bus barn was reported flooded by district officials.

Canton Public Schools Information Director Beverly Luckett said Wednesday morning just before 10 a.m. that the bus routes had been completed.

"The water has now receded," Luckett said. "The buses have run their routes and delivered to schools the students they were able to pick up."

According to General Manager Leroy Chaney, Durham School Services runs 27 routes for the Canton Public School District and about half of those routes were affected by flooding.

Buses were about 35 minutes late completing their routes. Some roads were flooded making it unsafe for buses to travel.

Around 8 a.m., the school district posted this message on their social media page:

"Due to to massive flooding at the bus barn and across the city, the buses will be considerably late this morning. There are some areas that the buses will not be able to get to."

Luckett said that they could not determine how many students are absent because of affected bus routes.

"We won't be able to ascertain why a student may have been absent today," Luckett said. "We can only tell whether there was a drop in attendance today."

She said that the district's technology department was working to determine if there was a marked drop in attendance district wide Wednesday.
