Prep soccer coach breaks win record

Jackson Prep Head Coach Jon Marcus Duncan is at the the top of the mountain in Mississippi high school soccer when it comes to all-time wins, passing Karl Friedrich of Harrison Central.

With a 7-0 win over Heritage last Wednesday night, Coach Duncan won his 832nd game between coaching the girls and boys teams at Jackson Prep, which gave him the record.

“When I started coaching, I had no idea what the all-time record for wins in Mississippi was. I remember after winning number 500, I was told that the record for wins was 831. Someone asked me, do you think you can reach that or break it? It never really dawned on me,” Duncan said. “It’s a remarkable milestone for me, but more importantly for the soccer programs at Jackson Prep. Without the support of great parents, players, friends, family, assistant coaches, and Jackson Prep, these wins aren’t possible. I want to share all of the wins with those that helped me along the way.”

Duncan’s overall record sits at 832-167-61 between coaching both soccer teams at Jackson Prep, with 460 of those wins coming with the boys program and 372 wins coming with the girls program.

He also has a nearly even split on state titles between the two teams, with 15 boys state titles and 14 girls state titles at Jackson Prep. He also has the state record for most state titles in a row, with ten straight state championships with the Jackson Prep boys program from 2011-2020.

“Some of my favorite memories are watching teams achieve their goals. Watching teams put in the hard work and winning a state championship is always rewarding,” Duncan said. “I’ll always remember the first girl’s state championship in my first year here at Prep. I’ll always remember that 10 year run that the boys program went on when they won 10 straight state championships.”

Duncan has also been able to coach his oldest daughter, Josie, who is a 2022 graduate of Jackson Prep and went on to win a national championship with the Jones Community College soccer team, along with his youngest daughter, Abby, who is a senior on this year’s Jackson Prep team and is also committed to play at Jones.

“Easily the best memories have been coaching my daughters, Josie and Abby,” Duncan said. “Both have won state championships at Prep and both have had great careers at Jackson Prep. That window is slowly closing with Abby being a senior. I’ll cherish those memories the most.”

Jackson Prep is off to a 4-0-1 start this season, as Duncan is pursuing his 15th girls state title with the program. The Patriots will be back in action August 22nd against Washington.
