Prep Roundup: Tri-County blasts Newton County

They may have already won the district outright, but Tri-County (8-1,3-0 in District 2-4A) isn't done yet. The Rebels continued to roll following a 42-8 beating of Newton County (3-6) in Flora Friday.

The Rebels had the game pretty much buttoned up at halftime, ahead 35-0 and tacking another touchdown and an extra point on the board in the third quarter for good measure. After three-quarters of goose eggs, the Generals managed a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Tri-County will be punching up this weekend as they hope to upset MAIS 5A opponent Hartfield Academy in Flowood.

The Hawks (6-3) are coming off a 13-7 loss to Lamar.

Ridgeland 61, Vicksburg 7

The Titans scored at will and wrecked another district foe Friday night in a huge 61-7 blowout win over Vicksburg.

Ridgeland standout quarterback Zy McDonald was near perfect, completing 17 of 22 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. McDonald also banged out 39 yards rushing on seven carries with two scores on the ground.

Senior Markell Young put in a good amount of work as well, recording 19 carries for 78 yards and three touchdowns with a longest carry of 16 yards.

McDonald's three passing touchdowns went to junior Richard Mays, who caught two of them and senior Yamarus Banks. Banks recorded two receptions for a total 26 yards and Mays had four receptions for 30 yards.

Though he did not record a touchdown, senior Devin Chambers led the offense with six receptions for 131 yards, including the longest catch of the night of 73 yards.

The offense just keeps getting better: the Titans (7-1, 4-0 in 2-5A) recorded 428 total yards with 176 yards rushing and 252 total in the air.

The win set up a huge game against Neshoba Central (5-3, 4-0 in 2-5A) Friday night in Ridgeland. The Rockets are coming off a 48-21 win over Provine in Philadelphia.



Canton 41, Callaway 13

Canton snapped a three-game skid with a decisive 41-13 victory over Callaway in Jackson.

Senior quarterback Jacobian Morgan completed 15 of 23 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

Morgan spread the wealth out to three receivers who were led by senior Jaiden Burns who recorded seven receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Tyros Dunbar and Juawon Taylor also recorded receptions for touchdowns.

Noted youngin standout on the Tiger squad, Gavin Griffin, recorded two touchdowns with 12 carries for a total of sixty yards. His longest run was for 15 yards.

Senior Nyles Montgomery also put his hard hat on grinding out 90 yards rushing and a touchdown on 11 carries. His longest sprint wen for 30 yards.

Senior kicker Jose Martinez completed all six extra-point attempts on the evening.

The Tigers recorded 315 total yards with 133 rushing and 182 receiving.

Mistakes were limited for CHS though Morgan recorded negative 21 yards on four carries and Montgomery recorded a fumble.

On defense, Cornerback Jakobe Walker led the charge recording seven tackles, one for a loss, and knocked four Charger passes out of the air.

Damon Lewis, a sophomore linebacker, recorded eight tackles on the evening and a sack.

Fifteen Tigers recorded tackles during their defensive attack.

With the loss, Callaway (4-4, 1-3 in 2-5A) is now riding a three-game spiral of its own.

Canton (5-3,1-3 in 2-5A) prepares to host Vicksburg (1-7, 0-4 in 2-5A) for a district matchup this Friday evening with dates against Provine and Cleveland Central still on the schedule.



Clinton 27, Germantown 13

The GHS Mavericks couldn't stop their three-game skid, falling 27-13 to district foe Clinton (4-4, 2-2 in 2-6A) in Gluckstadt Friday evening.

The Mavs (3-5, 0-4 in 2-6A) trailed just 10-6 at halftime. The Arrows extended their lead by ten in the third quarter and matched Germantown's lone second-half touchdown in the fourth quarter to stave off any attempt at a comeback the Mavs could mount.

Germantown scored both of their touchdowns in the air off the arm of junior Colton Gardner on scoring passes to senior Ojavien Francis and junior Monterrio Walker.

Gardner did what he could, but the junior single caller only completed only 16 of 41 passes for 220 yards and included two interceptions and a fumble. His longest throw of the night connected to Francis for 81 yards. Francis had five receptions and 105 yards receiving. Walker's lone reception was the touchdown for 15 yards.

The Mavs recorded 429 yards of total offense.

The defense was led by Sophomore Devin Arrington who recorded 13 tackles and followed closely by senior Luke Lary with 11 tackles.

Defensive linemen sophomore Zxavian Harris and junior Chris Sanders both recorded sacks harried the backfield and a few other plays.

Sanders had nine tackles on the evening and Harris recorded five.

On special teams, junior kicker Dylan Wasson made up for a missed field goal early in the game after he kicked a successful extra point in the fourth quarter. Watson kicked a total of eight punts for a total of 298 yards for an average of 37.3 yards with a longest kick of 51 yards and one landing within the 20-yard line.

Francis made a splash returning four kickoffs for 97 yards with a longest return of 29 yards. Sophomore Tykwon Wade had one return for 32 yards in addition to recording two receptions for 15 yards on offense.

Tim Shramek will take his squad to Greenville on Friday for a district matchup with Greenville High School. The Hornets (3-5, 1-3 in 2-6A), who are also on a three-game losing streak, most recently fell 69-21 to South Panola in Batesville. The Tigers, who have lost one game to Starkville, recorded a decisive 35-7 victory over Germantown earlier this season.

After Friday's bout, they have two district games left against Madison Central and end the season at Murrah who is currently 1-7 and winless in district play.



Velma Jackson 32, Crystal Springs 13

Bernard Euell's squad looks like a wrecking crew after steam-rolling Crystal Springs 32-13 on the road to pick up its fifth win in a row.

The Falcons built a 19-6 halftime lead and out-scored the Tigers 13-7 in the second half.

Diallo Thompson slung 11 passes, completing six, including two for a touchdown.

He hit Quendarian Williamson with a 45-yard bomb for a touchdown, but his top target was junior Jordan Harvey, who had four receptions for 94 yards and one score.

Sophomore running back Terrance Mack kept the pace with 108 yards on 13 carries, the longest of which went for 35 yards, and averaged 8.3 yards per carry. He recorded one touchdown on the evening.

Thompson also recorded a rushing touchdown on two carries for a total of seven yards.

Velma accomplished a lot with a tidy 308 yards of total offense.

The defense had several standouts led by Carsyn Day. The sophomore safety had two interception, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and seven tackles on the evening.

Junior Demonize Lynn led the team in tackles with 11. Jonathan Bacon also recorded an interception and seven tackles.

The Falcons (5-3, 3-0 in 6-3A) remain undefeated in district play and can take another step towards a region title with a win over McLaurin (2-7, 0-3 in 6-3A) this weekend in Camden.



Yazoo County 42, St. Andrew's 0

St. Andrew's was shutout for the second week in a row, falling 42-0 to Yazoo County on the road Friday.

St. Andrew's quarterback Trey Herbert completed 13 of 19 passes for 55 yards but never found the end zone, with one interception. He also recorded a fumble that resulted in a Tiger (7-2,2-1) touchdown.

Lleyton Carr led the Saints in rushing with 14 carries for 54 yards.

In the trenches on defense, seniors Jordan Simmons and Isaac Watts recorded five and six tackles respectively. Simmons also had an interception.

In the backfield, Carr and sophomore free safety P.J. Bryson recorded nine and eight tackles. Sophomore outside linebacker Jamon Harkless shored up the middle with seven tackles.

St. Andrew's (2-7,1-2) last win came against McLaurin 29-22 in Ridgeland on the first Friday of this month, but the Saints (2-7, 1-2 in 6-3A) can bolster their resume, with two home games against Raleigh and Crystal Springs to finish the season.

Riverfield 50, Canton Academy 14

Canton Academy (1-7,0-2) dropped a decisive 50-14 loss to Riverfield Academy in Rayville, La. Friday.

They have one game left in the season, a home bout against Indianola Academy this weekend. The Colonels (5-4,2-1) are coming off a 26-14 win over Greenville Christian, their third victory in a row.



Jackson Academy 51, Presbyterian Christian 33

Jackson Academy returns to the Brickyard Friday with two wins under their belt, including last week's 51-33 win over Presbyterian Christian in Hattiesburg.

The Raiders (5-4, 2-2 in 1-6A) running assault rolled to 511 yards and seven touchdowns against the Bobcats. Sophomore Marcus Harris led the team with 32 carries for 268 yards and a whopping four touchdowns and two two-point conversions. William Janous followed close with nine carries for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Parker Ryan had six carries for 45 yards and one touchdown.

Senior kicker Land Gebhart completed all five of his point-after attempts and kicked off to the Bobcats seven times for 380 yards.

JA prepares to host Starkville Academy (6-3) in a non-region game for it's final home game of the season.
