A Carthage man fleeing Madison police Tuesday afternoon eventually crashed his vehicle near Camden and was charged with multiple felony violations.

The chase began on I-55, went north through the center of Canton and ended on Highway 43 just north of Mississippi 17.

Darrell J. Holmes, 20, of Carthage, charged with numerous traffic violations including driving with a suspended driver's license, felony fleeing from law enforcement, and possession of a controlled substance, said Madison Police Capt. Kevin Newman. There were no injuries.

Newman said there were two other occupants of the vehicle who were released without charges.

The incident happened on Tuesday at approximately 3:45 p.m. when a Madison Police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2007 silver Nissan Altima northbound on I-55 near mile marker 109 for careless driving and an apparent window tint violation.

"Upon activating the police vehicle's blue lights and siren the vehicle failed to yield and continued northbound on Interstate 55," Newman said.

The officer pursued the fleeing vehicle at which time the Madison County Sheriff's Office was notified.

As the vehicle proceeded past the Nissan plant on the interstate, deputies from the Madison County Sheriff's Office joined the pursuit.

The vehicle exited east at the Peace Street exit into Canton. Officers continued the pursuit east on Peace Street through Canton. As the vehicle exited Canton the fleeing vehicle turned north onto Highway 43.

The officer and deputies continued pursuing the vehicle until it passed Highway 17 on Highway 43.

After passing the intersection at Highway 17 the driver lost control causing the vehicle to crash into a ditch.

Holmes remains in the Madison County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
