Ohio man flees police into Yazoo

Madison Police were joined by four other local and federal agencies in a pursuit that resulted in the arrest of an Ohio man wanted for probation violations.

Roman Monrae Sims, 34, of Dayton, Ohio, has been arrested and charged with felony fleeing and multiple traffic violations in the Sept. 2 incident. Officers were also able to determine that Sims was wanted out of Dayton, Ohio, for a probation violation. 

Madison Police spokesman Robert Sanders said that Sims was arrested with the help of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Yazoo County Sheriff’s Department, and agents with the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

“The Madison Police Department would like to thank the assisting agencies,” Sanders said. “It is a perfect example of what can be accomplished with great teamwork.”

He said the arrest stemmed from an incident that started on Sept. 2 at 2:12 p.m. when an MPD officer working criminal enforcement on Interstate 55 conducted a traffic stop near the 107-mile marker in Madison. 

During the course of the traffic stop, the officer became suspicious of criminal activity and requested the driver, now identified as Sims, to exit the vehicle, a 2020 Hyundai. 

Sims originally exited the vehicle but returned to the vehicle and fled the traffic stop. 

The Hyundai then proceeded north on Interstate 55 where the officers were joined by deputies of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. 

Sander said that Sims was seen throwing items from the driver’s window and crossing the median several times in the pursuit. He then continued north on Interstate 55. 

The pursuit continued northbound into Yazoo County where the vehicle crossed the median and began traveling northbound in the southbound lane before running through a fence and proceeding into a field before coming to rest on Deason Road. The suspect then fled on foot.

MPD and a host of other agencies began searching the area and continued their search into the following day. During this search, officers determined that Sims was wanted for the probation violation in Ohio. 

During the investigation, the coordinating agencies were able to take Sims into custody at a church near Lemon Road in Yazoo County. Sims was transported back to the Madison Police Department and charged.
