North qualifies to compete in national debate tournament

Madison Central Speech and Debate has qualified its first student, Luke North, to the National Speech and Debate Association Tournament.

The NSDA Tournament will be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June.

North qualified in Congressional Debate to the tournament, earning second place overall in the House of Representatives at the qualifier held at Germantown High School last weekend. To qualify for the NSDA tournament, competitors compete against students from all over Mississippi over three separate weekends in Congress, Debate and Speech/Interpretation.

Each school is limited to the number of competitors to be brought to the qualifiers, so only the best from each school attend with under four students per event being advanced to nationals. Out of fifty congress competitors in the house, only four were chosen to attend. This is the first time North has qualified for the NSDA, but he has attended the national competition for the NCFL his sophomore year.

Madison Central also had three other students pick up alternate positions for the NSDA in Congress, including both Neely Kiihnl and Vineeth Vanga in the Senate, and novice competitor Madison Biggerstaff in the House. The team also had the most finalists out of any team in the House of Representatives, including finalists Kelsey Mayhan, Sarah Grace Shurden, Jason Tu, Thaddeus Flagge, and Julia Van Lake.

Madison Central has had major success in Congressional Debate at the NSDA. In 2016, Ian Hennington earned 2nd Place in the nation in Congressional Debate. Last year, Conner McMillin made it to the Quarterfinal round in the House at the NSDA. In addition to NSDA success, MC has had multiple MHSAA State Champions and finalists in Congress and earned finals at the NCFL Grand National Tournament.

The team now prepares to continue their national qualifying season with the JCFL tournament in February.

MC Speech and Debate is under the direction of Mrs. Rachel Clapper-Davis.
