New surgery option benefits hysterectomy patients

A new minimally invasive option for hysterectomy procedures is now available to central Mississippi patients. Known as vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES), the advanced gynecologic technique provides many benefits to female patients, such as a shorter hospital stay, less postoperative pain, no visible scars, and a faster recovery time.

W. Ashley Hood, DO, and William Bush, MD, members of the medical staff of Merit Health River Oaks, have been specially trained on this innovative approach to hysterectomy and other common gynecologic procedures. Dr. Hood and Dr. Bush, who are the first surgeons in the greater Jackson area performing this technique, have been offering this procedure to enhance patient care for women.

“As a surgeon, I am continually seeking opportunities and training to offer the most advanced techniques to my patients,” said Dr. Hood. “As a less invasive option, this procedure provides many benefits to my patients, including quicker recovery time, less pain and no visible scarring.”

“The vast majority of my patients are able to leave the hospital the same day they were admitted for their hysterectomy procedure. They appreciate the fact that they can return to their busy lives more quickly and get back to what matters most,” said Dr. Bush.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists have recommended vaginal hysterectomy, whenever feasible, as the approach of choice.

In the U.S., about 500,000 hysterectomies are performed each year for women with chronic pain, fibroids, heavy bleeding, endometriosis, and precancerous or cancerous tumors.
