Ridgeland Mayor Gene F. McGee said he looks forward to a “new era” for the Ridgeland Police Department after swearing in new chief Brian Myers on Friday.

“We are excited to see what Chief Myers brings to the department and to the City of Ridgeland,” McGee said. “We are looking forward to a new era.”

McGee swore Myers in on the morning of Friday, July 1 at City Hall. Myers, like his predecessor, has spent his entire career in law enforcement at the Ridgeland Police Department.

Myers’ career in law enforcement began in 1998 when he was hired as a patrol officer with the Ridgeland PD. Since then, Myers has held various positions within the Ridgeland PD, including commander of both Criminal Investigations and Patrol divisions and co-commander of the SWAT team.

McGee described the departure of former Police Chief John Neal as “bittersweet” as he said he looks forward to what Chief Brian Myers will accomplish during his tenure.

“Obviously we are saddened at the departure of Chief Neal,” McGee said. “It is bittersweet. Sweet in that we know he is moving on to something else that is good for him but we will miss him.”

McGee described the transition as easy.

“We named Myers as chief soon enough that Chief Neal was able to participate in the transition process,” McGee said.

Former chief Neal retired after a career spanning more than three decades. Neal was appointed as Ridgeland’s Chief of Police in 2015, and took over the department on July 1 of that year. He was hired as a patrol officer in 1989.

The outgoing chief has worked his entire career in law enforcement with the Ridgeland Police Department.

During his tenure, Neal served under former Ridgeland Chief’s Acy, Charles Newell, Jimmy Houston and Randy Tyler.

A reception was held for Neal at City Hall on Friday, June 24.
