Officials say that a minor earthquake near the Ross Barnett Reservoir early on Thanksgiving morning didn’t likely shake anyone from their sleep, but seismologists detected the rattling.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded about 7.5 miles southeast of Canton on Nov. 28 at 1:48 a.m.

The USGS reports the earthquake was recorded at a depth of five kilometers, or about three miles.

Six earthquakes have been reported in Madison County since 2010, according to information from the USGS. Four were detected in 2015 between May 3 and and August 17. The largest were two 3.2 magnitude quakes detected about 4.3 miles southwest of Canton on May 3 and June 29.

USGS reported most recently a magnitude 2.8 earthquake was detected in the county on Aug. 9, 2019, just north of the city of Madison.

According to the Michigan Technological University, an earthquake of 2.5 or less is “usually not felt.”

The USGS says damage is not typical until an earthquake measures between 4 and 5 in magnitude.
